There are many fun things to do while in the Smokies. Cades Cove is a great place to bike. Cades Cove is the most popular of all the things you can do in Gatlinburg. This tiny mountain valley is hidden in the Appalachian Mountains. Once a bustling community, it is now a beautiful retreat. Cades Cove still has many rustic log cabins and cantilever barns. Here are some other things you can do during your vacation.
Drive to Newfound Gap. Drive through the national park until you reach Newfound Gap. This gap is located between Tennessee and North Carolina. You can stand on either side of the Tennessee-North Carolina border while you are there. The mountain pass is at 5,046 feet elevation so you can enjoy the breathtaking views of the foothills below. Newfound Gap runs the Appalachian Trail, so if you ever dreamed about hiking a portion of it, you will want to go there.
Chimney Tops (3.3 miles roundtrip). One of the most famous hikes in the Smokies is the Chimney Tops trail. The hike is short and offers stunning views at the top. But don’t be fooled if you only cover a small distance. The final mile is a steep climb up to the top with an elevation gain of more than 800 feet. The Chimney Tops were destroyed in the massive Gatlinburg Fire of 2016. However, a new viewing platform has been constructed where the trail ends.
